June 21=World Giraffe Day

Happy World Giraffe Day!

Okay, so it’s not an actual holiday, per se, but it IS the day that has been designated to bring awareness to the world about the struggle of wild giraffe populations, as well as the giraffe’s cousin, the okapi.

Most everyone is aware of the conservation needs of say, the panda. Or the African elephant. Or the recovery efforts for the California condor. What most people don’t realize is that there are far fewer giraffe in Africa than there are elephants! About 25% as many, in fact! According to http://www.worldelephantday.org, there are approximately 400,000 African elephants on the continent; according to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF) (www.giraffeconservation.org) there are only about 80,000 giraffe!

World Giraffe Day celebrates the existence of these “gentle giants.” I urge you to visit the GCF website listed above to learn more about these amazing creatures! Did you know that their spots help control their body temperature?!?
There is more to say, but that is actually for a future post!
Until next time…!
